Chulu East Climbing Route
You drive from Kathmandu to Besi Sahar and gradually ascend along the Marshyangdi river valley through lush forest.
The trek gently climbs up to higher villages to get the best acclimatization possible till you reach Pisang at 3200m altitude. As the route leads closer to the Tibet border, you have a fantastic insight of the tibetan culture with ancient Buddhist temples and Tibetan villages.
When prepared and fully acclimatized, the camp is set at lower Base Camp. You have splendid views of the snow-capped peaks and the rocky slopes. Take some rest and get higher to High Camp where you attempt your summit push. Extra days are included in your itinerary depending on weather conditions.
As you reach the top, you have a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding peaks. Return back to Base Camp and trek down towards the Kali Gandaki valley. Now follow the main Annapurna Circuit route and cross the Thorung La pass at alt. 5416m. Final descent to Jomsom where you take your flight to Kathmandu via Pokhara.
Climbing Season
The best seasons are from March to May and September to November. the trek takes you to terrace fields walking through valleys covered with rhododendron and pine forests.
In the mountain, you climb in clear weather and sunny days. As you climb turns to alpine climate, although days will remain warm, nights will be colder with sudden weather changing conditions. In March and November you should expect more clouds and snow falls.
Acclimatization & climbing program
First climbed in 1955 by a german expedition, Chulu East is an altitude ascent suitable for all climbers physically and mentally prepared to tackle the challenge. The trek is designed to slowly increase altitude to adapt your body to the lack of oxygen.
The climb is straigtforward ascent to the summit but with reasonnable altitude gain. Most of the climbing involves walking roped together with a glacier crossing and involves a long demanding day for the summit attempt. The difficulty also remains in altitude as you can suffer from Acute Mountain Sickness with headache, nausea, and sometimes poor sleep in upper camps.
We recommend that you stay fit. Walking, climbing, running, cycling or/and swimming several times a week before your climb is recommended to be in an excellent physical condition before booking for Chulu East.
You should also have the suitable climbing knowledge to climb Chulu East. Undertake a 5 days training course in Chamonix with our expert guides.
Safety gear on your climbing expedition
Your guide will carry a Gamow bag, also called portable hyperbaric chamber in case of altitude sickness. It is used to reduce the effects of altitude during an evacuation procedure. It is recommended that you bring your personal medical kit.
A 4 Liter
Oxygen cylinder will be provided with mask and regulator (
Top Out system or Poisk) for medical purpose. We will allow 1 cyinder per group of 4 climbers.
The group willbenefit from a Satellite phone during the expedition. You can buy credits via "Pay as you go" scratch card directly in Kathmandu before the begining of your trek. Payment in US Dollars.
We will require a medical certificate from your doctor that allows you to participate the climb. Prepare yourself physically to efforts especially as the walk can be strenuous in high altitude and while crossing the Thorong La pass.
Accommodation on your Chulu East trip
Chulu East is a lodge and tented accommodation adventure. During your trek, you sleep and eat in comfortable village lodges along the route. Meals and overnights are included in your itinerary (except drinks and personal food).
Rooms are well maintained and cosy. Food is good with plenty of traditional meals (as Dal Bhat and Momos) and we take an extra care on hygiene to advoid stomach bugs. Bring a towel, comfortable shoes for evening time and warm clothing for the night (fleece jacket) for the trek.
Meals
3 meals a day are provided on your trip. We take an extra care on your personal diet and the hygiene. The products are carefully selected to prepare tasty local and western courses to vary the menu on each day trek. Hygiene is particularly respected to avoid any illness related to food in order to remain in excellent condition during your trek.
Our altitude cooks are among the best. They prepare tasty local and western courses with Nepali, Tibetan and Continental meals.
Fresh food with fruit and vegetable will be supplied in altitude camps to offer the best dishes possible and advoid dehydrated food with poor nutritional value.
Climbing team
The guides are highly skilled professionals native from the mountain valleys of Nepal. They have an unrevail knowledge of the local customs, the culture and the fauna of the region. They have years of knowledge and experience and believe in sharing their passion of adventure providing an incomparable cultural insight of the country.
Our climbing team is well-trained and assist you during your climb. They are responsible for the installing camps before the ascent and guiding you on your summit day. We assure a high-quality leadership with our local sherpas. They know well the mountain, the region and they are all well experienced and trained to climb in altitude. We provide 1 climbing sherpa per 2 clients, ratio 1:2 to maximize safety.
Your Sherpa will make sure that each member has suitable knowledge to climb, is self-sufficient and able to climb towards the upper camps. They will also insure that you climb and come back in full safety.
What about tipping ?
In Nepal tipping guide and porters is expected and common although it is not compulsory. Please allow approximately USD 20$ to 50$ (or more for altitude sherpas) per pers to be divided equally between the crew staff. If you feel that the service is good, we recommend leaving a tip.
Visa & permits for Chulu East expedition
We arrange your Chulu East climbing permit and the applicable Peak fee in Kathmandu with the Nepal Mountaineering Association for a group of 4 pers. It is important you send us a copy of the identity page of your passeport upon booking to issue the documents. Bring 2 ID photos and your passeport with you.
Eco-friendly behaviour
REACH SUMMIT feels very concerned about environmental matters. Annapurna region also suffers from the impacts of climate change. Glaciers are rapidly melting, changing the face of the Himalayan region.
During the trek, although villages crossed are supplied with electricity and running water, those places remain remote and hard to access. Always make sure you bring you litter with you and do not through anything in nature. Some villages have difficulties to properly collect and bring down waste (always by road and mainly on foot). Always be respectful and do not leave things behind that could spoil or damage the environment.
Your guide will collect your rabbish every morning or organise a disposal point were you could leave your garbage. Do not leave any gear in altitude camps and always bring back your belongings.
