Few weeks before you set off to your trekking route, Reach Summit will send sherpa people in the above mentionned villages to inform the local communities and the entire valley of the dental services project. Patients will then have enough time to plan their journey to reach our camps.
Your itinerary may vary depending on the dental program and schools to visit. Altough we will try to follow the above itineraries, routes can be re-routed and amended for the needs of the Charity program. Your trek will always be adjusted to the needs of the population and may not exactly follow the above itinerary proposed. You should be prepared to take other routes and have your itinerary modified. The trek may also be transfered to another region if Langtang is inaccessible or for any other unforeseen reason out of our control. The transfer can be organised without any prior notice.
The Charity Project and Donation
Reach Summit will donate to Dr Mingma Sherpa's Association the amount of the membership fee per signing trekker. Book for the Charity Trek and Reach Summit will donate the equivalent of your annual membership fee to the Dental team. In return you will receive a membership card and a waterproof jacket that indicate that your trek has contributed to help the children of Nepal.
To help Dr Mingma Sherpa, you can also :
- Bring medical supply.
- Do volunteer work alongside Dr Mingma Sherpa in Khumbu, Langtang or Manaslu regions.
- Ease foundrasing by becoming a sponsor of the Dr Mingma Sherpa's Dental project.
The team
- Dr Mingma Nuru Sherpa, dentist
Dr Mingma Nuru Sherpa was born in Khumjung a remote village in the Solu-Khumbu area in Nepal situated near Mount Everest. Mingma attended Khumjung High School which was the first school built by Sir Edmund Hillary. Mingma graduated with distinction in 1990 and was subsequently awarded a scholarship from the Everest Marathon Foundation UK to study at the National School of Dental Therapists in Canada.
Mingma received a further scholarship from the Everest Marathon UK which enabled him to study at the University of South Pacific (Fiji) to obtain a Bachelor of Dental Surgery.
In 2002, Mingma undertook 5 weeks of undergraduate training in oral surgery at the University of Otago in New Zealand.
In 2003 Mingma completed a one year internship at the People’s Dental College in Kathmandu
to gain his registration with the Nepal Medical Council and Nepal Dental Association as a fully
qualified dentist.
Dr Mingma Sherpa will supervise the Dental Charity Project.
- Caroline Cuif-Letrange
Caroline will organise all logistics, provide the best team possible to make your trip a safe and enjoyable experience and make sure that everyone is sharing a memorable moment at all times. Caroline or a professional photographer will undertake a photo shoot work and propose a DVD with beautiful cliches. 100% of the money collected will be donated to Dr Mingma Sherpa Dental Charity Project.
Health Condition
The trek is accessible to all trekker in good shape. Your trek may include 4/5 hours walk per day and is followed by days in villages to support the Dental Charity Project. You should be in good physical conditions to participate. The Everest itinereary is more strenuous though due to altitude. Nevertheless, we provide enough days of rest to help acclimatization.
Please, consult your physician prior departure to join the Charity trek. You must have all necessary inoculations that a trek in local and rural conditions require. Your doctor should provide a medical certificate that indicate that you are allowed to travel in exotic places where hygene and life condition may not reach the western standards.
You must inform Reach Summit of all and every medical health problem, food intolerance and medication prescription upon booking.
What gear to bring ?
You can purchase most of your gear in local trekking shops in Kathmandu. Waterproof or down jackets, trekking pants, socks, sunglasses, suncream with high SPF - western brands available -, walking sticks, hats and caps, ponchos, daypacks and headtorch can easely be found in Thamel, the Kathmandu touristic area, at very affordable price.
Besides, we recommend that you purchase your trekking shoes in your country and to break them in few weeks before getting on trek to avoid blisters. Shoes with an ankle support and a Gore-Tex lining are highly recommended. You can also bring waterproof trainers or sandals while in villages and for evening time.
Visa & permits for Langtang and Everest
We arrange all applicable permits for Langtang and Everest Regions from Kathmandu with the Nepal Toursim Board. It is important you send us a copy of the identity page of your passeport upon booking to issue the documents. Bring 2 ID photos and your passeport with you.
Accommodation on your Charity trek
The Dentail Charity trek is a lodge accommodation adventure. During your trek, you sleep and eat in comfortable village lodges along the route. Meals and overnights are included in your itinerary (except drinks and personal food).
Rooms are well maintained and cosy. Food is good with plenty of traditional meals (as Dal Bhat and Momos) and we take an extra care on hygiene to advoid stomach bugs. Bring a towel, comfortable shoes for evening time and warm clothing for the night (like a fleece jacket) for the trek.
Eco-friendly behaviour
REACH SUMMIT feels very concerned about environmental matters. The Himalayas also suffers from the impacts of climate change. Glaciers are rapidly melting, changing the face of the mountain regions.
During the trek, some villages crossed may not be supplied with electricity and running water and those places remain remote and hard to access. Always make sure you bring you litter with you and do not through anything in nature. Some villages have difficulties to properly collect and bring down waste (always by road and mainly on foot). Always be respectful and do not leave things behind that could spoil or damage the environment.
Your guide will collect your rabbish every morning or organise a disposal point were you could leave your garbage. Do not leave any gear in camps and always bring back your belongings.
