Climate & seasons
Tibet is a harsh place to live as it can be very windy and cold, especially during winter. Temperature can also vary within a single day, rising up to 25°C during the day and dropping down far below zero degree during the night. Lhasa has good weather conditions though with very cool temperatures and very sunny days.
The rainy season starts from May to September and you may experience more showers and rain falls during these months. July and August are less recommended as precipitation causes landslide and road blockage making your trip a little bit more adventurous but the sceneries are fantastic. During this season, valleys are greener and the sky is incredibly beautiful, blanketed with deep-grey clouds showering the fields.
Sunlight is very intense and sun radiation very strong. The Tibetan plateau is very high in altitude and the thin air does not shield the sun radiation and UVs. The elevation of Lhasa city is 3650m with lots of days of sunshine. Protect your eyes with category 4 sunglasses, use a high SPF sun block cream for your skin and always wear a hat or a cap to protect you from the sun.
April - May - September - October are the best trekking times to enjoy a breathtaking view of Everest slopes as it will be a crystal clear sky most of the time. April is also the climbing period and you could share the atmosphere of a climbing expedition camp heading to the summit of Everest.
Avoid travelling from December to February as it is the coldest period of the year.
Equipement recommended
All trekkers will have to bring their own personal gear. Nevertheless, you could do some shopping in the streets of Kathmandu. You will find various clothes, backpacks, hiking shoes and other small equipment in the local shops. Be aware that most of the sleeping bags, jackets and rucksacks are locally manufactured in Thamel and are counterfeit.
Tibet is a very windy region and can be very cold especially in November. Pease, take a warm jacket and plenty of thermal underwear to face dropping temperatures during this season.
Please do not forget to put the following gear in your bag:
- Trekking Pants
- 3/4 season down sleeping bag
- Jacket Gore-Tex with hood
- Down jacket with hood - 400 fill
- Fleece jacket
- Merino wool or similar base layer
- Trekking shoes
- Sandals or trainers
- Sunglasses (100% UVA &UVB protection)
- Strong sun cream with high SPF and lip protector
- Warm woolen beanie, gloves and socks
- Light windproof jacket

Our leaders speak fluent English, Nepalese, Tibetan and Chinese for the well-being of the group. This friendly team will support and assist you at all times.
What about tipping?
In Tibet tipping the driver and guide is expected and common although it is not compulsory. If you feel your guide or driver has done a good job, please allow approximately USD 20 - 50 per person to be divided equally between Tibetan crew members. As the season in Tibet is quite short, extra income is often expected to sustain the rest of the year with fewer tourists. Thus, we highly recommend that you leave a tip for the Tibetan staff.
In Nepal tipping is less expected. Nevertheless, wages and living standard are very low. If you feel that the service is good, we recommend leaving a tip of 500 rupees or so.
