Trekking route

The Everest Base Camp trek offers an enjoyable trip to all adventure trekkers who wish to get on the tracks of the 1953 Hillary and Tenzing's Everest expedition. The trails are good and you will benefit from enough acclimatization days to fully adjust yourself to altitude.

From Kathmandu, you enjoy a splendid flight along the Himalayan range to Lukla and then have a pleasant walk to Phakding. The trail is gradual on most of the way with impressive crossing suspension bridges over Dudh-Kosi River.

From Phakding you walk through pleasant trails with few short uphill and downhill with magnificent views of Thermasarkhu - 6,608m - to the entrance of Sagarmatha National Park where your trekking permit is checked. From here a short descent and a gradual walk brings you to the astonishing capital Sherpa village of Namche Bazaar. The walking track is an uphill path all the way to the colourful houses of Namche Bazaar.

In Namche, you benefit from an extra acclimatization day to enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding snow capped giants. From Namche the trail is fairly easy and you walk on the gradual trail with few short ups and downs. The trail gently winds up under the shade of firs and rhododendrons. Many stones, prayer flags and the colorful Thyangboche Monastery welcome trekkers in splendid surroundings..

From Thyangboche, the walk is gradually uphill most of the way with crossing bridges over the narrow gorges. Have a good rest day in Dingboche to adjust your body to altitude. From here the trek is more strenuous with constant uphill and a straight trail to reach the Dugla Pass. Then the trail gently gets towards Lobuche when you can have a rest in the Teahouses.

You leave Lobuche to Gorakshep for a short day of walking on a rocky moraine path. After a day’s rest here at Gorakshep, the trek continues towards Everest Base Camp. The walk is quite strenuous due to high altitude and thin air. The trail passes through over rocky dunes and moraine till you reach the Base Camp on the glacier. Getting back to Gorakshep for dinner and a short night sleep. At 4am you leave Gorakshep and climb the rocky slopes of Kala Pattar, alt. 5,545m. The climb is a definite challenge as it is a constant ascent straight up into thin air.

At the top, you are rewarded by the spectacular surroundings of snow capped peaks as Thamserku, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam. An impressive panorama of the highest peaks in the world!

Cultural interest

Getting through the Khumbu Valley is a unique travel to one of the most beautiful regions of Nepal.
The trail follows the river Dudh Kosi and gets into the magnificent Himalayan pine and cedar forests. As you walk up your body will adjust to altitude and slowly acclimatize

Namche Bazaar is the capital of the Sherpa people and remains an important trading point between Tibet and Nepal. As you walk up to Everest Base Camp, the villages get culturally very rich with colorful Buddhist Monasteries, various Gompas and Monastic Communities in very remote places.

Training

The Everest Base Camp trek does not require any technical or mountaineering experience. It is a non-technical trek suitable for good walkers who can to walk for 4 - 6 hours per day with a light backpack. Some of the days will be quite long, and the walking would feel more arduous with altitude. The trail is a good trek, but occasionally it will be rough, bumpy and rocky, especially on Kala Pattar and towards Everest Base Camp.

You’ll have to walk long hours to villages up to alt. 4000m. and you should prepare yourself physically as the walk can be strenuous on the last part. Walking, running, cycling or/and swimming several times a week before your trek is recommended to be in an excellent physical condition.

Altitude has to be considered as it is possible to suffer from AMS. We will require a medical certificate that allows you to take part of the trek.
