Gokyo route

From Kathmandu

You will walk about 4 to 7 hours each day, depending on trails and altitude with some rest and acclimatization periods. From kathmandu, you will enjoy a splendid 45 minutes flight along the himalayan range to Lukla alt. 2,800m and then have a short 3 hours walk to the village of Phakding at alt. 2,652m. The Sherpa crew will sort the bags on Yaks and split the loads that are carried by porters. The walk is gradual on most of the way, with few ups from Tarhe khola, for a superb view of the mountains. Crossing a short suspension bridge you will have a short climb to the Ghat village and then to Phakding village for the overnight stop near the bank of the Dudh-Kosi river.

From Phakding

From Phakding you walk through pleasant trails with few short uphill and downhill with magnificent view of Thermasarkhu alt. 6,608m along the Bhote-Koshi river to finally arrive at the small village of Monjo. The village of Monjo is situated below the magnificent peak of Thermasharkhu and near the entrance of Sagarmatha National Park where your trekking permit is checked. From here a short descend and a gradual walk brings you to the asthonishing capital Sherpa village of Namche Bazaar. The walking track is a uphill path all the way to the the colourful houses of Namche Bazaar.

From Namche Bazar

From Namche, the route turns west, contouring the hillside. After reaching the ridge looking Namche down below, you will follow a gradual winding path on a very popular trading route into Tibet often used by the Tibetan traders along prayer flags and "Mani Stones". After descending to the Bhote Kosi the trail climbs steeply for 45 minutes to Thame village where we camp for the overnight. Follow the trail to Khunde and Khumjung, the largest of the Sherpa villages in the Khumbu area, with a quite strenuous walk uphill due to high altitude. Keep on walking on a gentle path that brings us to the village of Khunde for the overnight. It is here strongly recommanded to walk slowly to prevent AMS symptoms as you will feel the altitude and the lack of oxygen. To reach Gokyo the main trail gets North with uphill paths on steep rock steps to Phortse Thanghka.

From Phortse

After Phortse, you continue your trek to Dole. From here the trail climbs steeply out of the valley through a patch of rhododendron forest and pastures where Yaks and other cattle graze in high pastureland. The trek winds through the Tongba village at alt. 3,950m and Gyele at alt. 3,960m and finally arriving at Dole. Then you climb steadily along the side of the valley, rhododendron forest and juniper as altitude gains gradually for a superb view of Cho Oyo alt. 8,210m. Your trekking day will head for the lakes at Gokyo following one of the glacial fed rivers. You climb a steep rocky trail passing the first lake. You soon arrive at the second lake, crossing the path which heads across a huge glacier and walking to the third lake known as Dudh Pokhari and on its east shore discover the settlement of Gokyo at alt. 4,790m for camping just by shore. The scenery is magnificent with the peak of Cho Oyo and Gyachung Kang reflected in its emerald green waters. Enjoy a beautiful rest and acclimatization day for a superb panorama and a hike to the splendid Gokyo Ri for breathtaking views providing a panorama of Cho Oyu, Gyachung Kang, Everest, Lhotse, Cholatse, Twache and far as to Mt. Makalu in the east.

Altitude makes the climb even tougher, walk slowly and drink regularly.

We recommend vaccinations against polio, typhoid, tetanus, and hepatitis A. Sleeping tablets are very dangerous at high altitude as it depresses your respiratory system. This Gokyo Lake Everest Panorama Trek is suitable for good trained walkers. The trail is a good track, but climb constantly. You will have to walk during long hours to villages up to alt. 4000 m.
