Lobuche East Climbing Route
The trek starts with a memorable airtrip to Lukla. The trails winds along valleys and climbs up to Namche Bazaar along the Dudh Kosi river. The trails are good and you beneficit from enough acclimatization days to fully ajust yourself to altitude. The trail is gradual on most of the way with impressive crossing suspension bridges.
From Phakding you walk through pleasant trails with few short uphill and downhill with magnificent view of Tamsarkhu to the entrance of Sagarmatha National Park where your trekking permit is checked. From here a short descend and a gradual walk brings you to the astonishing Sherpa village of Namche Bazaar. The walking track is a uphill path all the way to the colourful houses of Namche Bazaar.
In Namche, you benefit from an extra acclimatization day to enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding snow capped giants. From Namche the trail is fairly easy with few ups and downs. The trail gently winds up under the shade of firs and rhododendrons. Mani stones, prayer flags and the colorful Thyangboche Monastery welcome trekkers in splendid surroundings.
Dingboche is quickly reached and offers nice views of Ama Dablam, Lhotse and in the distance Island Peak. From here you spend two nights to optimize the process of aclimatization before getting to higher altitude. Comfortable tea-house, nice trails leading to village fields and even cyber-cafe with internet connection will keep you busy while getting extra rest.
Group loads and your expedition bags are carryed by yaks along the way. Trek light and carry a 30 liter daypack filled with a camelbag, extra water bottles, energy bars, warm clothing, MP3 and camera.
Cultural interest
Getting through the Khumbu Valley is a unique experience to one of the most beautiful region of Nepal. The trail follows the river Dudh Kosi and gets into the magnificient himalayan pine and cedar forests. As you walk up your body will adjust to altitude and slowly acclimatize.
Namche Bazaar is the capital of the Sherpa people and remains an important trading point between Tibet and Nepal. As you walk up to Everest Base Camp, the villages get culturally very rich with colorful Buddhist Monasteries, various Gompas and Monastic Communities in very remote places.
Climbing team
The guides are highly skilled professionals native from the Kumbu valley. They have an unrevail knowledge of the local customs, the culture and the fauna of the region. They have years of knowledge and experience and believe in sharing their passion of adventure providing an incomparable cultural insight of the country.
From guides to cooks or porters, the staff is a hard working team with strong enthusiasm and a really great "can do" attitude making your trip an unforgattable adventure.
Our climbing team is well-trained and assist you during your climb. They are responsible for installing all camps and guiding you on your summit day. We ensure a high-quality leadership with our local sherpas.
They know well the mountain, the region and they are all well experienced and trained to climb in altitude. We provide 1 climbing sherpa per 2 clients, ratio 1:2 to maximize safety.
Your Sherpa team will make sure that each member has suitable knowledge to climb, is self-sufficient and able to climb towards the upper camps. They will also insure that you climb and come back in full safety. Camp are set by your Sherpa crew and they will assist you during your climb.
What about tipping ?
In Nepal tipping guide and porters is expected and common although it is not compulsory. Please allow approximately USD 20$ to 50$ (or more for altitude sherpas) per pers to be divided equally between the crew staff. If you feel that the service is good, we recommend leaving a tip.
Safety gear on your climbing expedition
Your guide will carry a Gamow bag, also called portable hyperbaric chamber in case of altitude sickness. It is used to reduce the effects of altitude during an evacuation procedure. It is recommended that you bring your personal medical kit.
A 4 Liter
Oxygen cylinder will be provided with mask (
Top Out system or Poisk) and regulator for medical purpose. We will allow 1 cyinder per group of 4 climbers.
The group will benefit from a Satellite phone during the expedition. You can buy credits via "Pay as you go" scratch card directly from us in Kathmandu before the begining of your trek (in US Dollars).
To make your trip a memorable experience, we also provide a shower tent with hot water to get the best acclimatization possible in a comfortable environment.
Acclimatization & climbing program
First climbed in 1984 by Laurence Nielson and Sherpa Ang Gyalzen, Lobuche East is an altitude climb suitable for all experienced climbers physically and mentally prepared to tackle the challenge. The trek is designed to slowly increase altitude to adapt your body to the lack of oxygen. We allow extra time in Namche, Dingboche and at Lobuche Base Camp to get fully acclimatized.
The trek to Everest Base Camp followed by the ascent of Kalapattar lead you to high altitude with one night above 5000m altitude before getting down to Lobuche Base Camp where you will have a hot shower and one day of rest. A contingency day has been included in your itinerary to give you all the chance of success for your summit day.
The climb is straigtforward ascent with steep slopes to the summit. Most of the climbing involves walking roped together, use of jumar on fixed ropes, crevasse crossing and involves a long demanding day for the summit attempt. The difficulty also remains in altitude as you can suffer from Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) with headache, nausea, and sometimes poor sleep in upper camps.
We recommend that you remain fit. Walking, climbing, running, cycling or/and swimming several times a week before your climb is recommended to be in an excellent physical condition before booking for Chulu East.
Lobuche Peak is an excellent training peak that involves most of the climbing techniques that require 7000 or 8000m expedition adventures in the Himalayas.
You should also have the suitable climbing knowledge to climb Lobuche East. Undertake a skill training course in Chamonix with our expert guides.
Meals
3 meals a day are provided on your trip. We take an extra care on your personal diet and the hygiene. The products are carefully selected to prepare tasty local and western courses to vary the menu on each day trek. Hygiene is particularly respected to avoid any illness related to food in order to remain in excellent condition during your trek.
Our cooks are among the best. They prepare tasty local and western courses with Nepali, Tibetan and Continental meals. Fresh food with meat, fruit and vegetable will be supplied in Lobuche Base Camp.
