The Mera Peak is one of the highest trekking peaks of Nepal. The trek offers splendid panoramas and stunning views of the surrounding peaks. From Lhukla, the trek is a slow altitude gain to ease acclimatization. On the way, we allow sufficient days of rest to help your body to adapt to altitude. Even though the ascent is not technically difficult, climbing Mera peak remains a long walk on a huge glacier in high altitude.

Climbing experience
Have you trekked to the top of Kilimanjaro successfully? Have you climbed some major peaks in the Alps or in America? Then you are now ready for an even more enjoyable challenge!
Mera Peak is the next challenging adventure peak suitable for all adventurers who would like to get a taste of higher altitude whilst gaining mountaineering skills. After an easy trek from Lukhla, your route gets more strenuous as you get towards Mera Base Camp. From here, you walk on a glaciated terrain using crampons, ropes and harnesses. The slopes are gently inclined but get steeper and more arduous towards the summit.
Is Mera Peak a trip for me ?
The ascent of Mera Peak is opened to mountaineering beginners with no experience of peak climbing. We organise a formal climbing skills training from Kathmandu. Before flying off to Lukhla, we meet up in the garden or the roof top of your hotel to learn the basics of climbing techniques. The guide will demonstrate how to put your crampons on, to slip on your harness, to perform a self arrest technique with your ice axe and finally to tighten your rope into your carabineer. When at Mera La, your guide will refresh memories with an "on the spot" skill training to make sure that everyone is self-confident and ready to tackle the walk on the glacier.
For maximum safety, we recommend that you have some knowledge about Acute Mountain Sickness symptoms. We will send you a full dossier drawn up by Dr Emmanuel Cauchy from Ifremmont in Chamonix Valley to help you understand how to prevent, recognise and treat altitude sickness. At all times, it remains important that you are able to apprehend altitude symptoms.
Mera Peak offers a great introduction to mountaineering for those who have little technical skills or prior mountain climbing experience at high altitude.
The itinerary is designed to offer enough rest days to allow your body to adapt to the altitude. From Lukhla, the first section of your trip is good with relatively easy trails. As you leave the trekking route and reach moraine ridges, the trails are an uneven terrain with beautiful Rhododendron forest paths after Chetra La until you get to Kare. From Kare, we allow sufficient rest days to get fully acclimatized and increase your chances of success.
The climb is a straightforward ascent to the summit but with reasonable altitude gain. Most of the climbing involves walking roped together with a glacier crossing with a long very demanding day for the summit attempt. The difficulty also remains at altitude as you can suffer from Acute Mountain Sickness with headache, nausea, and sometimes poor sleep in upper camps.
We recommend that you stay fit. Walking, climbing, running, cycling or/and swimming several times a week before your climb is recommended to be in an excellent physical condition before booking for Mera Peak.
- Chutanga to Chetra La - high altitude pass to cross in steep and bumpy terrain.
- Summit push - night climb along glaciated and crevassed slopes.
Climbing team
The guides are highly skilled professionals native from the mountain valleys of Nepal. They have an unrivaled knowledge of the local customs, the culture and the fauna of the region. They have years of knowledge and experience and believe in sharing their passion of adventure providing an incomparable cultural insight of the country.
Our climbing team is well-trained and will assist you during your climb. They are responsible for installing camps before the ascent and guiding you on your summit day. We assure a high-quality leadership with our local Sherpas. They know the mountain very well; the region and they are all well experienced and trained to climb at altitude. We provide 1 climbing sherpa per 2 clients, ratio 1:2 to maximize safety.
We provide a fantastic team of porters to carry the group loads.
Your Sherpa will make sure that each member has suitable knowledge to climb, is self-sufficient and able to climb towards the upper camps. They will also insure that you climb and come back in full safety.
Climbing permits
We issue all trekking and climbing permits with the Nepal Mountaineering Association. Since 1978, there are 40 mountain peaks have been opened to western climbers. As these mountains do not require the logistic of a climbing expedition, they have been classified as Trekking Peaks, although they remain demanding mountaineering trips.
It is important you send us a copy of the identity page of your passport upon booking to issue the documents. Bring 2 ID photos and your passport with you.
Safety & climbing gear
With a group of 6 or more persons, a 4 Liter Oxygen cylinder will be provided with mask and regulator (Top Out system or Poisk) for medical purposes in Kare. With a group size under 4 persons, we carry Oxygen Pressured Bottles instead.
Your guide will carry a Gamow bag, also called portable hyperbaric chamber in case of altitude sickness. It is used to reduce the effects of altitude during an evacuation procedure. It is recommended that you bring your personal medical kit.
A helicopter rescue service is available from the Khumbu Valley in case a life is at risk (in supplement with extra cost - Reach Summit® do not bear the cost of such a rescue). Be sure to have the right travel insurance that covers beforehand the cost of the rescue - about $5000 USD. Learn more >
The group will benefit from a Satellite phone during the expedition. You can buy credits via "Pay as you go" scratch card directly in Kathmandu before the beginning of your trek. Payment is in US Dollars.
You can hire small climbing gear from Kare. Nevertheless, we highly recommend that you have your own gear (Koflack climbing boots or similar, down jacket, goretex shell, crampons, ice axe and helmet).
We will require a medical certificate from your doctor that allows you to participate in the climb. Prepare yourself physically especially as the walk can be strenuous at high altitude.
Climbing Seasons
The recommended seasons to climb are April/May and September/October.
In spring the pre-monsoon wind can be very strong at altitude. At that time of the year, we recommend that you bring extra layers of gear (primaloft jacket or vest, warm base layer, down gloves ...) as temperatures may drop down dramatically with the wind-chill effect. Ski goggles are also a good gear have in your bag.
In autumn, you may experience more snow falls at altitude and rainy days in lower camps. We strongly recommend good rain cover for your bag and rainproof jacket for altitude. Ponchos to cover body and bag alike are a light and useful gear to bring.
A comprehensive gear list will be sent to each climber upon booking.
Meals
3 meals a day are provided on your trip. We take an extra care on your personal diet and hygiene. The products are carefully selected to prepare tasty local and western courses to vary the menu on each daily trek. Hygiene is particularly respected to avoid any illness related to food in order to remain in excellent condition during your trek.
Our altitude cooks are among the best. They prepare tasty local and western courses with Nepali, Tibetan and Continental meals. For small groups or private trips, meals are cooked in lodges at each camp.
Fresh food with fruit and vegetable will be supplied in most camps to avoid dehydrated food with poor nutritional value.
Eco-friendly behaviour
REACH SUMMIT® feels very concerned about environmental matters. The Makalu-Barunste region is very popular with hundreds of climbers each year. The valley suffers from the impacts of climate change. Glaciers are rapidly melting, changing the face of the Himalayan region.
Always make sure you bring your litter with you and do not throw anything away irresponsibly. Some villages have difficulties to properly collect and bring down waste (always by road and mainly on foot). Always be respectful and do not leave things behind that could spoil or damage the environment.
Your guide will collect your rubbish every morning or organise a disposal point where you could leave your garbage. Do not leave any gear in altitude camps and always bring back your belongings.
From Lukhla, the flight time to Kathmandu is scheduled in the morning. Sometimes, your flight can be delayed due to bad weather, gusty winds and other reason beyond our control. Always check your travel details in case you cannot be on time in Kathmandu to catch your International flight.
