You must be fully insured and have a comprehensive travel, repatriation, evacuation and cancellation insurance including helicopter and air rescue services.
We also recommend that you take out cancellation insurance to cover any unforeseen situations. You must ensure that your policy provides an adequate level of protection and covers you for all adventure trips, trekking and high altitude climbing activities.
On treks, you will have to make a copy of your passport identity page and always carry your proof of insurance in a safe place. Reach Summit® reserves the right to refuse a member that does not have suitable coverage and they will not be entitled to any refund, no matter if your trip has already been paid in full. No claim will be accepted. All details are in your acknowledgement contract >
2 - Insurance coverage for any trip:
Always pay attention that your insurance does not have exclusions for "dangerous activities", mountaineering, trekking, rafting, canyoning or climbing activities above a certain altitude (you must be covered for all activities above the altitude of 4000m). Reach Summit® will not be responsible if your insurance does not cover you adequately during outdoor activities, and then as such cannot organise efficiently your rescue, evacuation or repatriation. All medical costs will have to be borne by your insurance, and always keep the receipts to claim refunds.
As you are ultimately responsible for all expenses incurred with evacuation / all transfers not included in your trip / medical expenses / repatriation / returning back before the end of your trip with all accommodation and meal expenses for yourself and your guide, therefore please make sure that it is covered by your insurance (keep receipt of all expenses on the way back).
3 - Insurance coverage while travelling in Nepal and Tibet:
In the Himalayas and for ALL climbing expeditions, your insurance must include emergency helicopter rescue service and bear air ambulance service costs.
Nevertheless, note that for Everest from North Side (Tibet), NO helicopter rescue is available. Your rescue will be organised by Sherpas, yaks and vehicles. Helicopters can ONLY be available from Nepal to fly to Kathmandu, but be aware that the cost is extremely high (approx. USD $5000/6000 USD per hour) and the service is not always possible to provide. All these costs will have to be approved beforehand by your insurance provider. The Helicopter will not take off until they are sure your insurance bears the cost of the rescue - Thus, your insurance adviser must have a 24/7 service to quickly organise your rescue or/and evacuation.
Please note: Reach Summit® does not bear the cost of any air rescue. Check that you have the suitable insurance to initiate your air rescue.
From Lukla, your flight to Kathmandu is scheduled early in the morning (around 6:00am). It can be delayed due to cloudy weather. Major delays may affect your flight back as the airport is situated in high altitude and often surrounded by clouds. Check that you are fully insured in case you miss your international departure due to bad weather.
4 - Useful advice before getting on altitude trek or climbing trip:
- Write down your blood group on your insurance papers and travel bags in case of emergency.
- Keep with you a copy of passport ID page, proof of insurance and Debit/Credit card.
Get the right insurance that meets the need of your travel activities, especially when you travel at altitude. Members that do not have suitable insurance will have their trip cancelled without any refund of the payments already made. For further advice, send an email >
